Infrared imaging is the earliest known method of breast cancer detection. This is due to the its ability to monitor functional changes in the beast tissue, while mammography relies primarily on finding an existing tumor.

Thermography is based on detecting the new blood vessels and chemical changes associated with a tumor's beginning and growth and can warn of this process eight to ten years before a mammogram can detect it. Even before the cells develop into a true cancer.

Most cancers are detected by mammography when the diameter of the tumor is about 1cm (about the size of a dime) and contains over 4 billion cells. Thermography does not replace mammography, but is an additional tool available to women.

Thermography was FDA approved in 1982 as an adjunct to mammography. By combining both technologies, the detection rate increases to 95-98%, surpassing either technology or a stand alone therapy.

The breast thermography procedure takes about 30 minutes to complete. The procedure does not require contact with your body and does not involved any radiation, sounds waves or invasive techniques. You will be asked to fill out the intake forms, disrobe from the waist up, acclimate to the cooler room environment, sit for the imaging session and then get ready to leave. All of this is done in a very professional, private and confidential setting. Interpretation and report generation is performed after you leave the office.

Preparation:
Prior to your visit you must follow these instructions that prepare you for your visit so that accurate heat readings from your breasts can be obtained by the camera. These instructions include limitations on food and drink consumption as well as restrictions on physical activity prior to your appointment. Some of these instructions require action 5 days prior to your appointment so please read them early. Following these instructions is vital to an accurate and high quality infrared image.

Arrival:
Arrive approximately 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment time. You will be asked to fill out the intake assessment form which includes health history and any areas of concern on your breasts.

Acclimation:
The exam room has a controlled cool temperature where you will be left for 10- 15 minutes disrobed from the waist up, in order for your body to reach a steady temperature state. During this time it is important that you do not touch your breasts or chest with anything. You must keep your upper arms away from your chest. Any long hair that could hang down into the chest area must be tied back. The skin must be at a stable temperature prior to imaging. The ultra-sensitive infrared camera is so sensitive that the images can be affected by the transfer of heat from other objects and parts of your own body.

The acclimation area is very private with a mirror, chair, counter top and a place to hang your clothes. Disposable hair clips and other items are provided at no additional cost to help you prepare for your exam.

Imaging Session:
After acclimation, you will be positioned on a swivel stool in front of the infrared camera and Julie, the thermography technician will take numerous images of your breasts, upper chest and under arms. You will be asked to move your body into different positions while Julie focuses the camera and takes the images.

The second part of the examination involves holding two cold packs in your hands and repeating one image looking at blood vessel reaction to the cold. Blood vessels that are produced by the body to nourish abnormal cells will not constrict in reaction to the coldness. This provides additional information to Dr. William J. Kneebone when interpreting the results.

Finishing Up:
With imaging completed you return to the acclimation area to dress and get ready to leave.

Interpretation:
The images from your examination are sent electronically in a secured format to Dr. William J. Kneebone, a Board Certified Clinical Thermologist with 23 years of experience reading thermal images. Dr. Kneebone will read and interpret the images and provide a full report that will be sent to you within 2 weeks of the test. Included in the report are recommendations for further testing or follow up thermogram scanning to monitor the health of your breasts.

Understanding Your Report:

Your report contains some technical terms that you need to understand. An explanation of these terms is provided with your report. Please take the time to review the thermography terms so you can better understand the information in the report.

Follow Up:
